A promotional price at your address: how long it lasts, and what if you activate later?

If starlink.com shows a promotional price for your address, the months start counting whether or not you've moved in. How the clock works, from Starlink's own terms.

Key takeaways

  • Starlink offers promotional service pricing for a fixed period, such as 6 or 12 months, to new customers in select areas, and shows it on the order page for the address.
  • The promotional period starts on activation or 7 days after delivery, whichever comes first, so a kit that sits unused still uses up promo months.
  • Changing plans, cancelling or being suspended ends Starlink's promotional pricing.
  • Standby Mode isn't offered on promotional offers, and Standby months don't count toward the referral reward's two billing cycles.
  • Shipping can't be pushed back (Starlink's help center rules it out), which makes your order date the main lever on when the promo clock starts.

A promotional Starlink price lasts a fixed number of months, and the count begins at activation or a week after delivery, whichever is sooner. Order weeks before you move in, and some of those discounted months can pass before you’ve used the service at all.

That catches people who order early to lock in a price they saw for a new address. Owners on Reddit asked about exactly this in 2026: whether a promo waits for a delayed activation, and whether Standby or a plan change ends it. Starlink’s own terms answer most of it.

Where a promotional price shows up

Starlink doesn’t publish promotional prices on a national list. Its promotional pricing terms say that “in select areas”, new customers can get discounted service pricing for a fixed period, “e.g., 6 or 12 months”, on Residential or Roam service, and that if your area has it, you’ll see the offer when you place your order on starlink.com.

So the address comes first. starlink.com shows no Residential price until you enter one, and the nationwide product file behind Starlink’s US order page held no promotion end date for any plan when we read it on Nov 4, 2026. The list does tag its Residential products “reduced cost” without saying what that means, so the order page for your address is the only real answer.

Two conditions travel with the offer, per the same terms: it’s only for new customers, and the discount applies to one service line. It also arrives with the address price, not as a code, because the US checkout has no field for one. How real Starlink promotions reach you covers the other routes Starlink uses, such as special links and emails.

When the promo clock starts: the first bill rule

Starlink’s promotional pricing terms are specific: “The fixed period for the discounted service price will begin on the activation date of your Starlink kit, or 7 days after the kit is delivered, whichever comes first.”

Your first bill runs on nearly the same clock. Starlink’s Terms of Service start billing at whichever of three moments arrives soonest: activation, the seventh day after the box arrives, or, with no delivery on record, the thirtieth day after it ships. Starlink’s billing help adds: “If you do not activate within 7 days after delivery, service is activated automatically.” From then on, each month’s bill falls on that same date.

Put together, about a week after the box arrives you’re activated, billed and counting promo months, whether or not the dish is on the roof.

Ordering before you move in

Here’s how a 6-month promo plays out in two cases. The day counts are an example, not a Starlink schedule.

Step Set up on arrival Move in 6 weeks after delivery
Kit delivered Day 0 Day 0
Activation Day 0, when you power it on Day 7, automatically
First bill and promo start Day 0 Day 7
You start using the service Day 0 Day 42
Promo time used before you use it None About 5 weeks
Promo months left once you use it 6 Just under 5

Asking Starlink to hold the kit won’t move the start either. Its help center is blunt: “We are unable to delay shipping timelines.” Edits and cancellations are possible only during the Pending status, a window Starlink says may close 1 to 3 hours after you order.

The practical choice is when to order. Ordering closer to move-in keeps the promo months for when you’ll use them. The risk runs the other way: wait, and the figure quoted for your address may not hold. A Starlink email, reported in October 2026, told customers that Residential pricing gets a review roughly once a quarter, with moves possible in either direction. Neither choice is wrong, as long as you know which months you’re paying for.

What if the kit is late? Starlink’s billing help says that if billing is about to begin and the kit still hasn’t arrived 30 days after shipping, the 30-day trial is extended by another 30 days and a one-month service credit is applied. Whether a late delivery also moves the promo start isn’t stated.

What ends a promo early: plan change, cancellation, suspension

Starlink’s promotional pricing terms name three things: “Customers who change their service plan, cancel their service, or are suspended, will lose their promotional pricing.”

  • A plan change counts whether you move up or down, including a switch to Residential Max for its extras.
  • Cancelling ends it, and because the offer is for new customers only, it isn’t there to pick up again later.
  • A suspension ends it too.

Starlink’s Terms of Service add that if you stop meeting a discount’s conditions, Starlink may remove the discount or charge your payment method for its value. One protection runs the other way: Starlink’s price adjustment article says that if your service is on promotional, introductory or discounted pricing, your monthly price stays the same until that pricing period ends.

Standby and promos: why they don’t mix

Standby Mode is Starlink’s pause: high-speed service stops for a small monthly fee. Starlink’s Standby article says you can pause on Roam, Residential and Priority plans “(excluding promotional offerings)”. A promotional plan can’t be paused, then. You pay the promotional price each month, or you change plans and the promo ends.

That matters for anyone who needs Starlink for only part of the year. A low promotional price you can’t pause can cost more across a year than a regular plan you can. If the plan is to order now and pause later, a promotional plan is the wrong fit, and so is ordering early to hold an offer.

Standby also doesn’t count toward the referral reward. Starlink’s referral terms require a referred customer to stay subscribed to a high-speed plan, which “excludes Standby Mode”, for two full billing cycles before the reward matures.

What to screenshot before you pay

The order page is the only place your promotional price is spelled out, so keep a record of it:

  • The plan name and the monthly price shown for your address.
  • Any promotional length or end date the page states.
  • Whether the kit is bought or rented, and any one-time activation charge or demand surcharge.
  • The order date, and later the delivery date from the carrier.
  • “Referral Code Applied”, if you opened a referral link before ordering.

After activation, the Billing tab offers a “preview invoice”. Per Starlink’s help center, it shows next month’s invoice with any promotion already applied, and it refreshes daily. Some customers on Reddit have described a preview that showed a discount the final charge didn’t apply, so treat the preview as a guide and check the invoice itself. Where to enter a code shows the order screens step by step.

Questions about this

If I order now and move in later, do I lose promo months?

You can. The promotional period starts on activation or 7 days after delivery, whichever comes first, so the months run from about a week after the kit arrives even if nobody sets it up.

Can I pause a promotional plan with Standby?

Starlink's Standby article excludes promotional offerings, so plan on paying the promotional price every month or giving it up.
